How Much Does a Good Skateboard Cost?

We recommend not buying a skateboard that retails for less than $80. There are good options around the $60 - $80 range for sure (and we will go through these) but when you start going under the $80 mark, components start getting pretty cheap.

Cheaper components will not hold up over the long haul and you'll end up paying more replacing them or buying an entire new skateboard.

For this reason, we recommend that if you are serious about skateboarding, spend at least $100 on your new complete build.

However, there are some instances that we actually recommend buying skateboards under $100. If you think you are in this park, read on!

The Case For Cheap Skateboards

We often get customers that are looking for a skateboard for their kid who just turned *insert age here*. These customers don't know how long the kid will like the skateboard, if at all.

Some customers don't know how long the kid will like the skateboard, if at all. There is a strong case to be made for boards under $100 for these customers.

For these types of customers, there is a strong case to be made for boards under $100. My first skateboard was $40 from Sport Chalet (showing my age here...) and it was instrumental to getting me started in the scene. These models are good enough to get a kid learning the basics of skateboarding without breaking the bank of mom & dad.

For this reason, I am going to break up our recommendations into three tiers of skateboards:

  • The Best Cheap Skateboards - These are the bottom of the bucket, but will at least get your little shredder on something and at a very low cost. These are going to be in the insanely low $20 - $40 for a complete range. The components are going to be pretty terrible, but what you get will resemble a skateboard and it'll be good enough to get started.
  • The Best Affordable Skateboards - These are going to be the mid-level cheap skateboards ranging in the $50 - $80 range. There are actually good skateboards here, but they will make some component compromises to get the price down lower.
  • Actually Really Good Beginner Skateboards - These are going to be great skateboards ranging in the $100 - $180 range. They will come with high quality components and be a professional level setup.

The Best Cheap Skateboards

PRICE RANGE - $20 - $50

Cheap skateboards are a good option for beginners because they allow them to learn the basics of skateboarding without spending a lot of money. Once a beginner has learned the basics, they can then decide if they want to invest in a more expensive skateboard.

I want to reiterate that none of these skateboards are objectively good. The components are very cheap and basically everything is made in China. That being said, they do provide a cheap taste of the world of skateboarding and that we can recommend.

Whew, making that list was a little painful. While these are not quality skateboards, they will get you started and getting started is 90% of anything. Ride safe and have fun. When you're ready to step up your game, check out our pick below.

The Best Affordable Skateboards

PRICE RANGE - $60 - $90

Now we are getting into the range of stuff that is actually pretty decent. The boards in this category are going to be less than $100, but still be good enough quality to keep for a while or easily upgrade 1-2 components to have a pro level board.

Actually Really Good Beginner Skateboards

PRICE RANGE - $100 - $180

These are some quality shred sleds that we can get behind. Boards in this category are going to cost you some hard earned cash, but we tried to give the best price/quality we could find readily on the internet.

  • Deck - Made from maple or maple + fiberglass. This is hands down and away the best construction for trick skateboards.
  • Trucks - Really good strong casting with clean fit and finishes. Good quality bushings and washers that hold up over time.
  • Wheels - High quality urethane is key to a good riding skateboard. This is the material that interfaces with the ground, so it better rebound for a smooth ride, but also hold its shape well.
  • Bearings - The most precise part of the skateboard and often a place companies cheap out, the bearings on these completes are very well made and have a quality lubricant pre-applied for longevity.

Is A 100 Dollar Skateboard Good?

Are you looking for a good skateboard that doesn't cost too much? A 100 dollar skateboard might be a good option for you.

First of all, let's talk about the deck. The deck is the most important part of the skateboard, so you want to make sure it's made from high-quality materials. Many decks in this price range are made from maple wood, which is strong and durable. You should also look for a deck that has been reinforced with fiberglass or carbon fiber to further increase its strength and durability.

Next, let's talk about the trucks. The trucks are the metal parts of the skateboard that connect the wheels to the deck. They should be made from high-quality materials as well, such as aluminum or titanium. The trucks should also be adjustable so that you can customize them to your riding style.

Finally, let's talk about the wheels. The wheels are what make the skateboard move, so you want to make sure they're made from high-quality materials as well. Many wheels in this price range are made from polyurethane, which is durable and provides a smooth ride.

So, is a 100 dollar skateboard good? Yes, it can be! Just make sure it's made from high-quality materials and has adjustable trucks. With a little bit of care, your skateboard will last you for many years to come.

How Much Does A Custom Skateboard Usually Cost?

A custom skateboard can cost anywhere from $50 to over $200. The price will depend on the materials used, the complexity of the design, and who is making the board. For example, a simple board made with basic materials may only cost $50, while a more complex board with high-end materials could cost over $200. If you are looking to get a custom skateboard made, it is important to shop around and compare prices before making a purchase.

What Are The Best Skateboards?

There are a lot of different skateboards on the market, so it can be tough to know which one is right for you. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a skateboard:

- What is your skill level? Beginner, intermediate, or advanced?

- What type of skating do you want to do? Street, park, or vert?

- What size deck do you need? 7.5", 8.0", or 8.5"?

If you're a beginner, it's probably best to start with a smaller deck and work your way up as you get more comfortable skating. If you're looking to do some street skating, an 8.0" deck might be a good option. And if you're interested in vert skating, an 8.5" deck might be better.

Once you've decided on the size of your deck, it's time to choose a brand. There are a lot of great skateboard brands out there, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one that you like. Some of the popular brands include Girl, Powell Peralta, and Santa Cruz.

Once you've chosen a brand, it's time to pick out a specific board. Each brand has a variety of different boards with different shapes, sizes, and graphics. So take some time to look around and find one that you think looks cool and that you'll enjoy skating on.

What Are The Features Of A Good Skateboard?

When choosing a skateboard, it is important to consider the features that will make it suitable for your needs. Here are some of the key features to look for in a good skateboard:

- A durable deck: The deck is the main surface of the skateboard, so it needs to be durable enough to withstand regular wear and tear. Look for decks made from tough materials such as maple or bamboo.

- Strong trucks: The trucks are the metal axles that attach the wheels to the deck. They need to be strong enough to support the weight of the rider and withstand repeated impact.

- High-quality wheels: The wheels need to be made from a high-quality material such as urethane, so they are durable and provide a smooth ride.

- A good bearing: The bearing is the component that allows the wheels to rotate smoothly. A good bearing will make your ride smoother and more enjoyable.

By considering these features, you can be sure to choose a skateboard that will be perfect for your needs.

What Is The Best Way To Get A Good Skateboard?

There is no one definitive answer to this question. It depends on a number of factors, including budget, skill level, and personal preference.

For beginner skateboarders, it is generally recommended to purchase a complete skateboard. This will include everything needed to get started, including the deck, trucks, wheels, and bearings. It can be helpful to consult with a local skate shop or online skateboarding community to get advice on what set-up is best for someone just starting out.

More experienced skateboarders may prefer to build their own boards from scratch. This allows for more customization and often results in a higher quality product. Again, it can be helpful to seek advice from those who know more about skating before undertaking this project.

Ultimately, the best way to get a good skateboard is to do some research and figure out what will work best for you. There is no single right answer, so it's important to find the set-up that suits your individual needs and preferences.

Why Is Skateboarding So Expensive?

Skateboarding is often seen as an expensive hobby, with many people wondering why the equipment and gear can be so costly. There are a few reasons for this, including the fact that skateboards are often made with high-quality materials and components, and require regular maintenance and replacement of parts.

In addition, skateboarding is often considered a risky sport, which can drive up the cost of insurance and medical care. Finally, competition among skateboard brands can also lead to higher prices.

How Long Do Skateboards Last?

If you're thinking about picking up a skateboard, you might be wondering how long they last. The answer depends on a few factors, including how often you use it and how well you take care of it. Generally speaking, a skateboard can last anywhere from a few months to several years.

If you're a beginner, you might not be using your skateboard as often as someone who's been skating for years. Beginners tend to ride less frequently and are more likely to take breaks between sessions. This means that their boards will last longer than those of more experienced riders.

How well you take care of your skateboard also plays a role in how long it will last. If you regularly clean and oil your bearings, tighten your trucks, and inspect your deck for cracks, your board will last longer than someone who doesn't do any of this maintenance.

So, how long do skateboards last? It really depends on how often you ride and how well you take care of it. With proper care, a skateboard can easily last several years.

How Do You Know If A Skateboard Is Good?

There are a few key things to look for when you're trying to determine if a skateboard is good quality. First, check the deck for any warping or damage. If there are any cracks or splinters, it's likely not a good board.

Second, make sure the trucks are tight and secure. Loose trucks can cause the board to wobble and be less stable. Finally, inspect the wheels to ensure they're not cracked or chipped. If they are, they'll need to be replaced soon.

By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your skateboard is of good quality and will last you for many rides to come.

Other Factors To Consider

You will want to look at a number of factors, if you’re considering buying a new skateboard. The type of skateboard will matter, as will the skateboard wheels, and the skateboard trucks.

Cheap boards will often have poor quality skateboard bearings, as well as flimsy grip tape. These are not things you want - often you are better off starting with a blank deck, and then building your own skateboard.

You should also have a skate tool, good protective gear (including knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a solid helmet) - as well as nice skate shoes. Walmart may have skateboard decks, but they often don’t have high quality components, and long lasting skateboard parts.

If you’re serious about the sport, you won’t want an average skateboard. The skateboard deck cost may be higher with a custom board - but a high quality skateboard setup is well worth the money.

You can look at cheap skateboards online, but often a good price will mask low quality components - like bad bushings, too soft wheels, or a longboard that snaps in half. Bones Reds bearings are high quality, for example - but they often won’t come on a pre-made street skateboard.

Penny boards are even more flimsy - so while they can be fun for cruising short distances - they’re not ideal for doing serious tricks in a skatepark. Skaters who want an electric skateboard should be equally picky, as you don’t want a low quality (or faulty) motor.
